What Happened to Profitability in European Hotels?
In some European hotel markets, profitability in July 2022 surpassed 2019. According to STR’s July 2022 data, some of Europe’s largest hotel markets surpassed 2019 in gross operating profit per room (GOPPAR).
Berlin’s July GOPPAR reached US$34.32, 183% of the pre-pandemic comparable. In June, the market reported GOPPAR at $98.21, 132% of the comparable 2019 level. Cities reporting significant improvement in the region; Berlin, Paris, London and Amsterdam while their GOPPARs exceeded 2019.
Occupancy and price
On the other hand, according to the institution, European hotel occupancy rates are 10% below pre-pandemic levels. In Europe’s July room rates, Athens, Edinburgh and Rome stand out, with prices 27% higher than in 2019.
